Futile Horn

09.13.2003 - 2:07 pm (some silly lines)

Kurt Loder listed as the two lifetime achievements of Johnny Cash 10 Grammy awards and 6 VMA nominations. Apparently MTV can’t even stop whoring itself for 20 seconds to honor the death of a legend. The sins of the American media are egregious. News is advertisement. Open forums are meticulously censored. When I watch tv, I am starting to get the same twisted feeling in my gut as when I see propaganda from the 40s and such. Why aren’t more people furious about being talked to like that?

I saw some kind of three-piece band last night. I think the trumpet also played the banjo at some point. I am certain at least that he played the maraca by banging against the other guy’s tuba. The trombone had suspenders, a pencil moustache, and some kind of fopped up 20s haircut. What a sexy beast.

I had tried to get someone to go see American Splendor with me last night, but no luck, so I wound up just wandering around town till fairly late. I remember having to walk home in the rain.

I had an encounter with some police officers. The story isn’t worth recounting, but I’ll just say I’ve yet to meet a cop who didn’t come off as not so bright.

I tried to write another song yesterday, but all I got were a couple of poems. Since there is nothing to do with them, I’ll just post one here.

A slow train comes at 3 a.m.
It bears the bulk of weightless souls
I lost the name for what I reach
I gaze upon those empty stares
The railway’s such a long way home
To what I’ve always felt before
I’ve given up the groundless hope
Seen the mirror like a stone
I feel the edge of every slice
Because my bones are full of life
And fresh with days of riper hue
And promise of an orchard bloom
Tell me once a bitter truth
To wrap across my shoulders round
I cannot bear these noble airs
With rights of birth I never claimed

Born to play the funky céilí,
Futile Horn
